Angel Tears (Formerly called Understanding)

Chapter 3: The Mirror

Pairing: Thiefshipping, mentions of Puppyshipping, Deathshipping and some others (find out which ones they are on your own :P)

Warnings: none really

A/N: Hello everyone! If there's anyone who's still reading this story even though I didn't update in a whole 8 MONTS!: Thank you for sticking with this story and not losing faith in me XD I could explain it all to you, why I didn't update, but it mostly was because I forgot to work on this story. What I told some of you, that I lost my story notes and that I dislike writing with those is the truth. But if it weren't for my laziness I would have rewritten the notes much sooner… Sorry… *gives you all 'I'm-sorry-cookies'*

About the new title: well it just fits better with the new plot ;)

And now enjoy the story!

My hand touches the cold surface, a shiver running down my spine at the feel of it. Lips form words, filling the round room I occupy. My room. In my house. Excitement and anxiety fight over domination of my feelings as I wait for something to happen. Will it work?

My eyes meet the amethyst ones of my brother, seeking reassurance, but I only find skeptics in those cold orbs. He may have promised to help, but that doesn't mean he believes everything. I am not exactly stable. At least that's what the others say. But who in this world is? Stable I mean.

Madness seems to be a common trait in this realm, the lack of sun and clean water eating away on our sanity. This hot dark prison. We cannot escape. Except for through death of course, but that dark fellow abandoned us as well. Doesn't like us as much as humans. They get to enjoy natural, painless deaths, unlike us who can only die through murder. Or the decease.

Finally something happens. A faint light starts emanating from the crystalline mirror I got from Tea and soon after the human girl's face appears on the smooth surface of the golden framed item. Her doe brown eyes brighten and a happy smile plays at her lips.

"So you actually believed me?"

I nod slowly. Of course I believe her. I mean usually I don't wake up with a mirror I have never seen before clutched in my claws. An item that doesn't resemble anything that exists in Hell. Not even close. And then such a valuable item I had just seen in a 'dream'. Why would she give me something like that if she wasn't being truthful?

"I'm glad." she whispers, "I wouldn't have found anybody who fits better for this quest than you."

"What quest is that anyway? If it's something that endangers either my brother or his child I'll personally see to your slow and painful demise." my brother suddenly interferes, scowl darkening his features.

A soft smile grazes Tea's lips and a look of understanding is in her eyes. She nods slowly, the always present breeze giving her a strange beauty.

"Don't worry Mariku-san. I will personally accompany him in his mission to make sure nothing happens. Though I do have to admit that it can become dangerous."

"Then I'll come as well. Can't leave my baby brother alone with you and no one to protect him. So what's that mission we'll go on?" growls Mariku.

To say I'm a little pissed off at his babying me is an understatement. I'm a demon for Satan's sake! I can fend for myself Lucifer damn it! I don't say anything though. It happens rarely that my twin shows care for me and I'm actually a bit moved despite my anger. Not that I'd ever admit that aloud.

"We'll have to find the old ones. But before those sent by your ruler and the ruler of heaven do. The one causing the plague will surely be among them."

Mariku nods in agreement.

"We should head off immediately then. Come Malik I know where we can get to earth without Pegasus realizing."

After saying that he grabs me by my wrist and pulls me out of our house, taking nothing but the mirror with us. I, too startled to react, realize that they didn't even ask me about what I think! Typical Mariku I guess. Just assuming I would go along with what he says. And quite frankly I do. When he says he knows a way out, he does. When he says we'll find the old ones, we'll do. My brother really isn't someone to mess with. He always gets what he wants and how he wants it. Nothing can stop him from gaining his prize.

He silently leads the way to the gate, but just before we go there, he turns right. Following a small path we eventually reach a small crack in the stone wall of the cave in which Hell is situated. Without hesitating Mariku squeezes through it and trusting him I go after him. The stone's clutches tug at my clothes, trying to get a hold of me and enclosing me in an eternal prison. It's nearly as if Hell doesn't want us to leave, tries with all it has to prevent us from leaving, but eventually, after an agonizingly long time of squeezing, we reach another cave, smaller than the one we live in. And a lot darker.

In Hell the great lava lakes glow bright enough so it's almost as if on earth during daytime, but here the only light source is a hole in the ceiling. Sunrays. A small smile tugs at my lips. I hadn't seen the human realm in a long time. And though it's really cold I always liked it up there. The change of day and night. The tides. The moon. The seasons. It always changes, shows another face every day. And in Hell it's always the same. Hot, tinted in orange light and the laughter of demons ever present.

Making his wings visible my twin spreads them and flies up to the hole, holding onto the edges before hiding them again. Then he hoists himself up through the crack, barely able to squeeze his body through it. When that is accomplished he motions for me to follow. And follow I do, copying his actions. Though for me it isn't quite as hard to fit through the gap, seeing as I am smaller and skinnier.

The human realm is more beautiful than I remember. And colder as well. A freezing wind, something we don't have where I come from, pulls at my clothes as I gaze upon the city that lays at the feet of the mountain Mariku and I are on. Houses, so unlike the stone huts in Hell, are red dots splattered across the valley, an occasional higher building poking out of the colorful mass below me. The most mesmerizing is a big tower with a sphere like ending atop which a long sting sits. I wonder what it is for. Maybe it's the human world's castle?

When I eventually stop enjoying the view I turn to my brother, who had waited strangely patient, to see him gape at the city. Oh yes, he's never been to the surface. How he managed to find that crack and know where it leads without coming here is a mystery to me. Most likely he was curious and came to the small cave, but didn't go through the hole.

I lightly tug at his cape to gain his attention. I see that it's hard for him pry his gaze of the city that lay cozily between the mountains. It's funny how childish he can be, seeing as he is the torturer and punisher. Those he has to hunt down receive no mercy.

"We should go down. There's a path leading to the village…" I say pointing at said path.

We could fly down, but would most likely be seen by someone so it's better if we don't. The way down is long and steep, but eventually we reach the city, Domino City as the sign at the border says. It's not as cold as up on the mountain, but still freezing. I bring my arms around my body and try to bring warmth back into myself, but to no avail.

Sighing Mariku takes the mirror out of his pant pocket and I call Tea again. She immediately appears on the smooth surface, smiling gently. In a hushed voice she tells us to go to the bottom of the big tower, which is apparently called a TV tower. She will meet us there. Nodding my brother repockets the golden item and we begin walking towards the place we are supposed to go to.

It doesn't take us long to find the tower, seeing as it is the highest building in the entire city. As promised Tea waits at the front entrance to it, a smile on her face, hair blowing in the wind. She is clad in a navy blue mini skirt and pink vest. White stockings reach the middle of her thighs and she clutches a brown bag in her hands. When she spots us she bows respectfully, shocking and disturbing both my brother and I.

"Ohayoo gozaimasu Malik-kun. Mariku-kun. I am happy that you came. Follow me; I think we should take this to my home."

The way to Tea's home isn't all that long, merely a walk of fifteen minutes. On our way we see a lot of strange buildings. The walls are made out of strange materials, not even a tiny bit like those I am used to from my home. And also a lot different from those I saw the last time I visited this realm. A lot cleaner and whiter. There also seems to be some strange kind of shield in the windows. Something that blocks the house's insides from view.

Tea's house is a big white ashlar atop which a red roof sits. A green door leads inside the building, revealing a brown floored hall in which we have to leave our shoes. The girl leads us to a big cozy room in which a soft looking bed like thing and a low table that strangely seems to be made out of wood can be spotted. Opposite to the bed thingy a black cubicle lives on a cupboard. Cream colored pieces of cloth hang beside the window through which, curiously, no wind comes. On the wooden floor lies a strange fuzzy blanket.

Tea drops her bag onto the table and hops onto the bed thing, motioning for us to sit down next to her. I curiously obey her demand and, oh god I've never sat on anything that soft before. Not even my bed, which is the softest piece of furniture my brother and I own, comes close! Sighing I lean back into the heavenly cushions and close my eyes, a content smile playing at my lips.

I could get used to that. This house. The human realm. It surely is more comfortable, more cozy, than Hell. And definitely a better place to raise a child. Completely lost in thought I begin to stroke my tummy in which my baby is growing. My and Bakura's baby. The thought of the angel causes a strange, but not unpleasant, feeling. It's like a tingling in my stomach and warmth spreading through my body. I want to see him again. That cocky white haired feather eater.

"Okay I did some research and it seems like there is some abnormal activity in Domino Forest, so I'd advise we start searching there."

Tea's voice brings me back to reality. Her expectant doe eyes questioningly gaze at my brother and I, her slight smile never leaving her face. It's as if it's plastered to her face. Or as if she was born smiling. In some way that is annoying…

Mariku nods, showing his consent with the brunette's suggestion and I too agree. This is our first and, up until now, only clue so it would be stupid not to investigate. Though it could also be some lesser demon haunting that forest just for the fun of it.

I start to get up, but Tea stops my by raising her hand and voice.

"Wait Malik-kun! There is something else I have to tell you. The mirror I gave you… you can not only communicate with me through it, but also other people. Like Yugi for instance."

I raise an eyebrow. Why would I want to talk to that midget angel? It wasn't like we have a lot to do with each other. He is nice and showed concern for me, but that still doesn't mean I want to talk to him just for the fun of it. But then enlightenment hits me. Yugi was an angel. Just like Bakura. Maybe I could talk to him through the tri color haired guy?

When I ask our host that she only nods, the corners of her lips stretching even farther up. A bubbly feeling of happiness settles in my stomach and I feel my heart rate increasing. Alone the thought of talking to the father of my child again makes me feel like the happiest being in all three realms.

Giddily I indicate for my brother to give me the mirror which he, after a short moment of reluctance, does. Tea instructs me on how to contact the tri color haired angel and shortly after I am face to face with the happy creature.

"You want to talk to Bakura I assume?" he asks, his huge purple eyes twinkling mischievously.

I nod eagerly, and smiling his face vanishes from view. Instead a world of perfection is revealed. White fluffy clouds are visible and green grass. So green and fresh it looks unreal. Everything is light and seems to glow on its own, no sun or whatsoever to be seen in the endless cerulean sky, not one imperfection marring the picture.

Yugi is moving, but what I can see barely changes. The trees, houses and bushes all look the same. What also catches my attention is the lack of animals. Even in Hell there live creatures other than demons, but is seems heaven is reserved for angels, and angels only. The only thing that indicates Yugi's coming forth is the fountain that he suddenly stops at. Its color is the same that all the buildings I saw have. White with a bluish tint. And as almost everything else it seems to be made out of clouds or something resembling those white fluffy puffs of vapor.

"Hey Bakura!" the ever happy angel's voice chirps and attracts the attention of the one sitting at the fountain's edge, his gaze lost in the endlessness of the sky.

The spoken to abruptly turns around, eyes narrowing and focusing on the one who disturbed his musings. The fire in those russet eyes, the snarling pink lips, they cause my breath to catch in my throat and blood to shoot to my face, making my cheeks feel hot. The memories of his touches, of his voice that whispers words of reassurance and fingers that stroke softly, suddenly overwhelm me and I want to cry about the unfairness of this whole situation.

Why can't we be of the same race? Why do we have to exist to far apart? It's like in the legend of the sun and the moon. Once, it is said, they were together, free to love each other, but then a monster, a being of none of the three races, saw them together. The beings heart was enclosed by jealousy instantly and so it cast a spell upon the moon, whose beauty it fancied, so it cannot leave the darkness the monster created, while the sun is kept away from its lover by the two guards, dusk and dawn. Only once every 140 years they can share a kiss when day and night are one. (1)

"What do you want Yugi?" Bakura asks, bringing me back from my musings.

Wordlessly the three color haired angel holds something out to the other holy being and reddish brown irises widen. A smile tugs at pale pink lips and a hand reaches out to take whatever device Yugi uses to talk to Tea, Mariku and I.

"Malik…" Bakura whispers, eyes darting to the sides in order to make sure he is not being watched by anyone who could be against his talking to me.

Not being able to believe I am finally able to see him again I breathe his name, biting my bottom lip nervously. Once again heat begins to pool in my cheeks and a smirk grazes the white haired angel's features as he realizes the blush that further darkens my bronze colored skin.

"I have missed you…" he states, his face emotionless.

But I can see through his charade. He is trying to hide his feelings and be tough, but what he can't control are his eyes. They glisten happily and that sign of emotion warms my heart. I wish I could touch him, kiss him, just be with him.

"I missed you too." I smile, putting everything I feel for him into those words.

It's like a love declaration actually. Neither of us is someone who openly speaks about their emotions and most certainly not about love. We are too proud for something like that and so we use our tone to show we care. And the eyes do the rest of our talking, us knowing the other could read what we wanted to say, but had no words to express.

"Where are you? This surely isn't Hell. At least it doesn't look like it…"

"No I'm in the human realm actually." I answer Bakura's question, "And when we're finished talking we, meaning my brother, the human Tea and I, will go to Domino Forest to investigate some strange happenings."

And then I explain everything to him. Tell him about how Tea contacted me and my mission. Nodding he accepts what I say and thoughtfully touches his chin with his thumb and pointer.

"So you have to find the Eldest? If that is so I will come to earth and help you. I can't have you fuck up this mission now can I?" he smirks.

Now is the moment! I have to tell him about our child. He deserves to know. I nervously fiddle with the hem of m lavender colored midriff, trying to find the right words. What is if he doesn't accept it? What if he doesn't like me anymore when he finds out? But no matter what, even if I might lose him, I have to tell him. I wouldn't like being left in the dark and I'm sure he wouldn't want that either.

"And there's something else you should know Bakura…" I eventually whisper, "I am with your child."

At that his eyes widen, shocked and for a moment I think he'll freak out. A few times his mouth opens and closes as if he wants to say something, but nothing but a gurgling sound leaves his throat. It's obvious that that was the last thing he expected. The last thing he wanted…

"I thought that was impossible! I mean we're two different races…" he mumbles, biting his bottom lip, "I have to think about this… I'll… I'll still come to earth though… I will…"

And then he is gone, leaving a baffled me behind. Yugi's worried face appears on the mirror's crystalline surface, apologetic eyes asking for our forgiveness.

"I'm sorry that 'Kura's rude like that… but this is a little much for him. He never wanted a child you know and I'm sure that was one of the reasons he chose you as his partner…" he speaks softly and as he sees my shocked and hurt expression he continues, "Uhm… I think I'll… I have to go now…"

And then the mirror is empty again, only showing what a mirror was supposed to show. Cold dread claws at my heart. Was that really Bakura's reason for taking me? His not wanting to have offspring?

A warm hand touches my shoulder and as I raise my gaze my eyes meet my brother's. A reassuring smile grazes his lips, which really shocks me seeing as he usually smirks and if he ever laughs it's crazy and frightening. Nothing like this warm raising of the corners of his mouth.

"I don't think that you just were a fling he couldn't impregnate. I saw the way he looked at you. You really needn't worry."

Hearing those words out of my twin's mouth leaves me gaping at him, not being able to believe he would ever say something like that. Mariku has always been the tough guy. The first to laugh at someone else's misfortune and the last to try and comfort the unfortunate bloke. It seems his meeting the three heavenly messengers has changed him as much as it has me.

"Hey how about I make us something to eat and then we'll go to Domino Forest?" Tea's voice suddenly chided in and as an answer my stomach chose that exact moment to growl hungrily.

Smiling the brunette girl gets up and leaves the living room for her kitchen. Not soon after the smell of food fills the human girl's home, making my mouth water. It really does smell delicious!

Not wanting to uselessly sit around and wait, I also go into the kitchen and after she showed me where everything is lay the table. Mariku soon joins me in my work and not too much later the three of us sit around Tea's wooden table. In front of each of us is a plate made out of some strange white material. On them are piles of rice with vegetables. Vegetables I have never seen before.

Long white ones and green leafy ones. Some orange chunks are in it as well. And that all is mixed with some delicious smelling brown sauce. I am glad to see and smell no meat. It seems Tea knows that demons don't really like eating another beings flesh.

"Itadakimasu!" our human host enthusiastically says and then we begin to eat.

As I taste the first spoonful of food my eyes widen impossibly. This is delicious! Definitely better than anything I have ever eaten in Hell. Which most likely is due to the fact that humans don't have to grow their food in sulfuric grounds. And that humans know more different kinds of vegetables and spices then us demons do. My gaze meets Mariku's and he seems to be as amazed as I am.

"You really did a good job there, Tea!" I tell our host and her face lightens up in a happy smile.

"I'm glad you like it…" she whispers, her cheeks slightly reddening at my praise.

Like starved animals my brother and I begin to wolf down what Tea prepared us, not leaving one corn of rice on our plates. I have to ask her for the recipe some time. My child deserves to eat something that good. I want him or her to grow up healthy and strong after all.

After we finish eating Tea puts the used plates in some strange machine she calls dishwasher. She explains that it cleans the dishes for her, hence the name.

"We also need one of those things…" I tell Mariku who immediately agrees.

None of us really likes cleaning and if there are gadgets that can do that for us we of course want to have those as well. How did we even manage to survive without such a thing as a dishwasher anyway? As I ask my twin doesn't know either.

Being fed and equipped with all the necessities, meaning food, the mirror and some of the weapons Tea stores in her closet, we eventually begin our journey to Domino Forest. It doesn't take us long to reach the mass of trees. Like a giant wall of darkness it lies before us, threatening and foreboding. Something dangerous lives in there, I am sure of it. Something so dangerous no flowers dare grow in between the nearly black trees that stand like wooden carcasses.

The silence that engulfs the place is deafening, the aura coming from within in waves suffocating. For the first time in a really long time I am afraid. Really afraid. But there is a mission to accomplish, the angelic and demon races to safe. I would stop the plague from killing Bakura's and my people.

Slipping my hands into my brother's and the brunette human's I take a deep breath. My gaze meets Marikuk's and in his lilac eyes I can see the same fear I feel. The same unease I can also feel emanating from Tea's form. And though my whole being screams for me not to, though even my strong and fearless twin slightly trembles in fear, though Tea's teeth chatter loudly, we walk forth into the all consuming darkness of Domino Forest.

Malik is talking about solar eclipses here. In one place on earth the phenomena of the moon hiding the sun only happens once every 140 years. A total solar eclipse only every 375 years. (I'm not talking about the phenomena of a planet hiding the sun by the way ;))

Dictionary:

Ohayoo gozaimasu – Good morning. (respectful)

Ohayoo – Good morning.

Itadakimasu – Thank you for the meal. (to the gods)

I hope you liked this chapter! :)

See you (hopefully) soon. The next update should come faster than this one did, but not as fast as the first was… I'm in the middle of my A levels and have to study a lot :(
